Taxonomies

The Taxonomies content source lets you display taxonomy terms as gallery items. You can use it to show:

  • categories
  • tags
  • custom taxonomies

Each term is displayed as a separate item with its own title, description, thumbnail, and link to the term archive page.

Available Options

The Taxonomies content source includes the following settings:

  • Taxonomy source
  • Taxonomies
  • Specific Terms
  • Hide Empty Terms
  • Parent Term
  • Order by
  • Order Direction

Taxonomy Source

There are three ways to choose what to display:

Single Taxonomy

You can select a single taxonomy directly, such as:

  • Categories
  • Tags
  • any public custom taxonomy

This is the fastest way to display one taxonomy as gallery items.

Taxonomies Set

Use Taxonomies Set when you want to display terms from multiple taxonomies in the same gallery.

After selecting this mode, choose one or more taxonomies in the Taxonomies field.

Manual Selection

Use Manual Selection when you want to choose specific terms manually instead of displaying all terms from a taxonomy.

After selecting this mode, use the Specific Terms field to choose the exact terms you want to display.

Selected Taxonomy

Hide Empty Terms

Enable Hide Empty Terms to hide terms that do not contain any published posts.

Disable this option if you want to display all selected terms, including empty ones.

Parent Term

Use Parent Term to limit the output to terms under a specific parent.

Available options include:

  • All Terms
  • Top Level Only
  • a specific parent term

This is especially useful for hierarchical taxonomies such as categories.

Order by

You can sort taxonomy items by:

  • Name
  • Post Count
  • Manual Selection
  • Term ID
  • Slug
  • Description
  • Parent
  • Term Order
  • None

Order Direction

You can control the order direction with:

  • ASC
  • DESC

Term Thumbnails

Each taxonomy term can have its own thumbnail image. To assign a thumbnail:

  1. Open the taxonomy term in WordPress admin
  2. Upload or select an image in the Thumbnail field
  3. Save the term

If a term does not have its own thumbnail, Visual Portfolio can use the featured image from the most recent post assigned to that term.

Posts Count

Taxonomy items can also display the number of posts assigned to each term. This option is available in supported skins and can be enabled in the item elements settings.
